The Future of Solid Walnut Flooring

03-06-2010 by Timmy

There’s just something about a hardwood floor. Ceramic tile, slate and even some high-end carpets can be very attractive. For some rooms, they may actually be the better choice, but do they ever have the same impact as the rich beauty of solid walnut flooring or the warm glow of an oak floor?

Not that many years ago, when someone told you that they had wood flooring in their house, you could safely assume that you knew what they meant. That’s not the case these days. While many will still be referring to solid plank hardwoods, others will have what is known as engineered wood flooring.

First, let’s be clear that we are not talking about laminate, which merely has the appearance of wood. Laminate imitates wood by the process of a photograph being glued to a fiber board and resin composite. While this product has been greatly improved, it will never count as wood flooring.

Engineered wood consists of at least two thin strips of hardwood pressed together. Because these layers are arranged with the grains running in different directions, the end result is sturdier than solid plank flooring which is susceptible to changes in moisture levels and temperature. Not having to be as concerned about shrinkage and warping opens up the ability to install engineered flooring products in areas that are usually not recommended for wood, like sub-grade and basement level.

Engineered wood has actually surpassed sales of solid plank flooring on the world market, although that is not yet the case here in the United States. Costs are practically equal and since the amount of wood required is less for the engineered wood floor, there is the added value of being more environmentally conscious.

While there is little doubt that the U.S. will follow the prevailing trend, there is a level of reluctance. Perhaps it’s the mystique, the idea of a “real” wood floor being one that is made of nothing more than lengths of timber. Despite all the rest, there really is something special about a true solid walnut plank floor.
