Dealing With Water Damage In the Home
It seems as though there is always something to look out for as a homeowner. It’s one of those fears that don’t exactly sit in the forefront of every person’s mind but the possibility that the house will be damaged due to water is a real possibility. Knowing what to look for to identify the early signs of the water damage will not only make the water damage repair job easier, it will also make it cheaper.
Some houses are being built with the water pipes in the ceilings rather than the walls and if there is a slow leak the water damage is going to go unnoticed for some time. When it appears it is fairly distinctive as a brown spot on the ceiling. The brown spot will continue to grow until it has become a brown ring if the leak is allowed to go unchecked. If the ceiling is made of drywall it’s possible that there will be some bubbling or the surface may begin to protrude.
Before any other action is taken it is very important that the source of the leak is found and the leak is fixed. It doesn’t matter what the source is, without fixing it the problem will continue to get larger and the damage will get worse.
When the source of the water has been fixed steps must be taken to dry out the materials that have been water soaked. By neglecting this step in the process the chances for the growth of mold are significant. Mold can cause health issues if allowed to grow so there is a need to dry all hidden nooks and crannies as quickly as possible.
While the drying process is getting underway, if you are not particularly handy, it should be time to call a professional drywall specialist to come in to replace the damaged drywall. This will be the case for both wall and ceiling damage with the most likely outcome of most cases of severe water damage resulting in the replacement of the damaged wall or ceiling panels.
