History Of Bike Tours

The history of bike tours is truly fascinating. Bike tours have mainly been associated with the upper class as the aristocracy of times past had more time to travel and spend in leisure. With the invention of the bicycle came many astounding feats for the people of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Once, a man riding a bicycle ousted a horse drawn carriage in a race. It was unthinkable and spectacular, but it was only the beginning of many adventures on wheels.

The first bike tour was probably made by three Englishmen who rode from Liverpool to Brighton in the space of three days. Their adventures were recorded by many. English folk along the way had mixed reactions. Boys in the streets of the villages they crossed would chase them to try and get a better look at the funny contraptions they were riding. In between some villages villagers laughed at them and sometimes threw stones at them.

Cycling today has a much broader appeal than when the first three friends set off in a crazy endeavor on wheeled contraptions that were so curious in those days. Modern cyclists all over the world enjoy riding through hills and meadows in the favorite race of all bikers- bike tours. Tours are all about enjoying the journey and making good time through well planned routes. As opposed to traditional bike races, the tour is a time for bikers to relax and get to know other cyclists.

Cyclists often form groups to travel long distances, stopping along the way to replenish supplies in the packs they carry on their bicycles. Biking over a long period of time and over a great distance is a wonderful bonding experience. The pack of bikers detach themselves from the routine of daily existence and become a band of brothers, enjoying the beauty of the countryside, in total obliviousness to the human need to compete.
