Finding The Best Cat Litter

Choosing the right cat litter can be much more difficult than one would imagine. This is due to the simple fact that cats tend to be very finicky creatures. The brand or type that would suit your own needs the best may not be the best cat litter for your cat. If you want to avoid unpleasant messes on the floor, it is very important to choose a type of litter that your cat likes, which can be especially tricky if you have more than one feline companion. Because each cat’s tastes differ, it may be necessary to try multiple brands and types in order to find the option that works best for you and any cats living in your home.

The biggest decision to make is whether you want to use clumping or non-clumping litter. Most cats are accepting of either choice as long as you choose a brand that they like, but some tend to be more picky than others. Some cats prefer fine, clumping litter because the grains are smaller and much easier on their delicate paws. For others, texture is not a problem. Clumping litter tends to be more convenient for people because it is easier to clean, but it also tends to stick to cats’ paws easier, making it more likely to get tracked around the house. Non-clumping litter, whether it is made of traditional clay or another material such as pine or cedar, is more difficult to keep clean because there is no way to remove urine, but it isn’t as likely to be tracked outside of the box. Non-clumping cat litter can also be found in a number of “green”, or environmentally-friendly, brands.

When trying to find the best cat litter, another important consideration is odour control. Many people opt for brands that are heavily scented only to discover that their cat refuses to use it. This is because of cats’ heightened sense of smell. They prefer litters that are unscented. This does not mean, however, that you are doomed to a smelly litter box. There are a number of brands, such as Tidy Cat Litter, that can be purchased in versions that contain natural odour eliminators such as carbon.

Finding the best cat litter usually requires experimentation. When shopping for litter, always keep your needs as well as your cat’s needs in mind, and you should be able to find the perfect solution with relative ease. Once you have found a brand and type of litter that both you and your cat like, stick with it. Switching back and forth between a number of different litters can cause many cats to stop using the litter box or to start using it less frequently.
