San Diego is known for its natural wonders found in beaches and parks, hip and modern lifestyle found in commercial centers, cultural and historic landmarks like museums, and numerous other tourist attractions like San Diego SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo. But it is not just a city for fun and leisure, because San Diego also has some of the most well-known universities and schools in California.
Perhaps the most well-known of these universities is the University of California, San Diego, located in La Jolla. UCSD, as it is commonly known, is one of the 10 University of California system general campuses, founded in 1960. UCSD is ranked number 1 university in the country by The Washington Monthly, is ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities as the 14th best university in the world, and was also ranked in 2010 as the 35th best university in the country by the U.S. News & World Report.
UCSD is a haven for research and development, as it is designated a sea and space grant institution. It is also the home of the UCSD Medical Center, which is affiliated with other research centers in the region. For many researchers, and prospective students alike, UCSD is the ideal school for San Diego.
Another university is San Diego State University, or SDSU. It is known as the largest and oldest higher education facility in San Diego, and the third oldest university in the California State University system. Like UCSD, SDSU is a hive for research activity, and has in fact been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a “Research University with high research activity”. It is the only California State University to have attained this title.
Because of this, SDSU has been included among the top 200 higher education institutions doing research in the country. In addition, it is ranked the number one small research university in the country by the Academics Analytics organization, and is ranked #21 in the list of “Tech’s 29 Most Powerful Colleges” by The Daily Beast.
Both of these universities are public schools, whereas University of San Diego, or USD, is a private Roman Catholic university. The university has 6 schools focusing on business administration, leadership and education, law, nursing and health, arts and sciences, and peace studies, offering over 60 degrees in the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. USD is ranked 94 in U.S. News & World Report’s National Universities list, ranked 6th and 4th in Princeton Review’s Most Beautiful Campus list in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
There are more universities to be found in San Diego, and all are very good choices for students from all over the country, and the world.
