As you will have seen in other articles online there is a place in our home and work for artificial flowers, and its big space, they really do have some great, practical uses at home, work, as wedding flowers and elsewhere in our lives. In this article though I’m going to have a look at the negatives of artificial and silk flowers.

One main thing that I have a problem with is that imitation flowers just don’t smell anywhere near as good as fresh flowers. The florists, manufacturers, retailers and scientists have tried their hardest to get a scent somewhat close to that of fresh plants and flowers. There are so many subtle nuances involved in the natural smell that it just cant be recreated yet. How can you possibly capture the smell of a summer day in a bottle? You can’t. And until they get it right, fresh flowers are going to be the first choice.

Then there are the looks, artificial flowers and silk flowers have come on in recent years. A few years ago you wouldn’t need a second look to know if the plant in front of you was real or not. Today though, you really need to have a close look to tell the difference. Although they still don’t have it quite perfect, fresh flowers still look better. There are all those details that nature has added over the years that man hasn’t quite got right yet.

Then there is the effect of artificial flowers in our home. As home owners we may be looked at as being lazy for having fakes flowers in our home. Maybe we can’t be bothered to take care of real flowers so take the easy route and go for flowers than require next to no care. Maybe we could be seen as cheap, that we wont pay out for a fresh bouquet of flowers every week. If we are too lazy to do the the minimal caring that artificial flowers need, for example, a little dusting and cleaning, then they end up looking terrible and bring down the tone of your house.

Real flowers might not last that long, the plus side is that they don’t last long enough to gather any dust. They die and get replaced with a fresh bunch and look great.

As we see there are quite a few disadvantages of using artificial flowers. For me, fresh flowers are always going to be top of the list. The freshness they add to a room is irreplaceable. There are of course advantages to using silk or fake flowers, there are many more articles out there boasting their benefits.

They could be what you need or they may not.
