Types of Jade

There are two different forms of the stone commonly called jade. These varieties are named nephrite and jadeite.

Located about 200 feet above sea level is an ancient sea bed where a large deposit of jade has been sitting for thousands of years. This jade, sitting in an iron rich soil, has actually oxidized or rusted. This gives the jade an amazing variety of colors which can often show up with some chatoyant (an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones, think of cats eyes) hues of yellow, red and orange. The rare piece will have these colors on the outside while you can still see the green or blue of the actual jade underneath.
