Replace Tobacco Using Smokeless Cigarettes

Announcement by Timmy

Do you smoke? Even if you don’t smoke, you will no doubt know someone who does. Smoking tobacco is highly addictive and nearly all smokers will want to try and stop. There are also more and more laws being introduced, meaning that the places that smokers can enjoy a cigarette will soon be few and far between.

There are numerous hazards associated to smoking. People who smoke are at greater risk of contracting mouth, lung and throat cancers, it wont be long before their teeth and nail start to turn yellow, and wrinkles are going to start appearing a lot earlier on a smokers skin. A smoker is also surrounded by that unmistakable smell that sticks to their clothes, hair and other belongings.

With smoking being so addictive it is so incredibly hard to put down those cigarettes and never pick them up again. So many people out there want to give it up, but they just cant. Also, there are the people that love smoking and have no intention of giving up.

As previously stated smokers seem to be getting picked on, they cannot smoke when ever or where ever they want to any more. For all of the times that smoking is not allowed perhaps you should try out smokeless cigarettes. Smokeless cigarettes are electronic smoking devices that deliver the hit of nicotine that the user desires but does not give off any harmful second hand smoke.

These little devices have been made so that they look and feel just like normal tobacco cigarettes. They run off of a small rechargeable battery. The mouth piece that looks like the filter is where all of the magic happens. This is where the liquid nicotine is stored, then when the device is activated this is super heated. This creates a water vapor which can be inhaled by the user. The user can get a fix of nicotine without annoying anyone around them. Electronic cigarettes can be used in almost all of the places that tobacco smoking has been banned in, giving the smokers some of their freedom back, allowing them more places and time to smoke.

The future of LED lights: What is next for LEDs

12-12-2011 by Timmy

If you have owned any electronic device in the last 10 years, chances are you’ve seen them — LED lights that is. LED is short for Light Emitting Diode, and these small but powerful light sources are rapidly becoming the staple lighting source for many applications (some you may not have even though of). This raises the question, what is the future of LED lights?

LED lights are renowned for their small size and unsurpassed energy efficiency. This makes the future of LED lights a bright one (pun intended). The small LEDs once reserved for use in electronics have found their way into mainstream lighting applications in our homes, on the streets, and even in our cars.

Perhaps the future of LED lights will lie in home applications. Homeowners are replacing their older incandescent bulbs with LED. These lights use far less power, put out ample light, and don’t promote heat like the bulbs of yesteryear. While these general purpose LED lighting applications are relatively expensive (currently around $15/ lumen), the future of LED lights predicts that lighting costs will be dramatically reduced by 2015 (around $2/ lumen).

LEDs have found another life in the automotive industry. Ford dealerships in Oklahoma have carried models that use color changing LEDs as a means for illuminating their dashboards and interiors. When shopping for a new Chrysler, Oklahoma shoppers can expect to find LED daytime running lights and fog lights.

The future of LED lights will be changing drastically over the next few years, but LEDs should still retain their job as the cutting edge electronic lighting source. LED applications have come along way from the blinking indicator light on your phone. With the reduction in size and power, LEDs are now able to produce the backlight for some of the world’s thinnest and brightest TVs.

In addition to this, because of their ability to produce pure lighting that can be rapidly cycled on and off, LED lights have found a home in the telecommunications industry. These small diodes are a prefect match for the rigorous demands of the fiber optic cables that deliver much of the world’s information.

You may encounter an unusual source of LED lighting each and every day. Many progressive cities are switching their stoplights to LED bulbs to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs. Imagine the energy savings per light multiplied by each light in your city.

The future of LEDs may not be what it was once though to be. With the reduction in technology costs, many applications for LEDs such as signs have been demised with the availability of other types of higher quality displays. By the vary nature of LEDs they produce a very pixelated and low quality image for a digital signboard.

Surly, as technology evolves and prices inevitably decline, the future of LED lights will expand beyond our wildest imaginations. These tiny lighting devices will soon start popping up in more places than ever imagined and shedding a whole new kind of light onto our world.

Tips For Consumers Buying Digital Cameras

07-12-2011 by Timmy

While digital cameras may be getting easier to use and give you the ability to do so much more than in the past, getting to the point where you feel comfortable buying a digital camera may seem a little overwhelming. Better technology will give you higher-resolution images, more sophisticated yet easy-to-use controls as well as higher optical zoom levels. But don’t let all the available features confuse you. Check out these tips on how to get the best digital camera for YOU and your lifestyle.

1. Prices And Models

Some of the top digital cameras, are the SLR models, like the Nikon D5100 digital SLR camera. These do cost more than the non SLR models, but they also deliver the best quality pictures you can get, so if that is important to you then consider making the investment. There are also a lot of budget models, but keep in mind that with these electronics you really do get what you pay for. Also, always shop online ad stay away from the retail stores where prices are significantly higher for the exact same product.

2. Test The Product

Try out various models of cameras before you buy one. Each camera has a different feel and balance so be sure to find one that fits your hands. Some camera commands and menus are more logical and easier to use than others but this can only be learned with a hands-on test. Different cameras will have different lag times between when you press the shutter button and when the camera actually takes the picture.

3. Optical Zoom Vs Digital Zoom

The optical zoom is what counts, NOT the digital zoom. You will see enhanced quality in your pictures due to the optical zoom but the digital zoom actually decreases the quality of the pictures by increasing pixel size. If you see a camera that just generically advertises “zoom” then you need to be sure to read the fine print for specifics. You only want to focus on the optical zoom when comparing features.

4. Digital Camera Reviews

If you have any friends or family members who own the same camera be sure to ask them about it. Read the online customer reviews that you can find but also seek out face-to-face opinions. That way you can ask questions and get a better feel for what owners like or don’t like about a camera and its features. It gives you a chance to see the quality of the pictures and maybe even test drive it for yourself.

It’s also very important to look online and find reviews from other customers Amazon is one of the best places to find such reviews, as many people leave detailed testimonials about the features, pros and cons of the various models of digital cameras.

Finding the best digital camera for YOU is simply a matter of knowing what your needs are and knowing some of the basics about digital cameras. Reading these tips should have helped you get started on the research you needed to do. Once you feel comfortable with the research that you have done, it is time to take the plunge and decide which model you will buy.

Tips For Buying The Best GPS Navigation Devices

30-11-2011 by Timmy

If you buy a GPS tracking device you will have an easier time finding your way while out driving around. Whether you are going to a part of your local area that you are unfamiliar with or whether you are on a cross-country trip, you’ll be able to have clear directions right at your fingertips there in your car.

But with all the brands and models with all their different features, how to you decide which is the best one for you? Check out these tips to get some ideas of where to start when researching.

Although there are many extra functions and features available on the best GPS navigation devices on the market today, it is also just as easy to get one with too few options. What you need to strive for is a quality GPS and a quality GPS accessory kit. This makes your investment very much worth it and you will not be having to replace your device any time soon. Nobody likes to pay extra for unwanted things or to not know about things they would have wanted.

A portable GPS unit is a lot cheaper and more flexible than one that is installed in your car. They tend to be less complicated to use and of course can be moved from car to car if you have more than one car or will be riding in someone else’s car and want to take it with you. You can install a portable unit on your windshield or dashboard by using the appropriate mounting unit.

Laws can vary from state to state and sometimes change so be sure to check current laws before you mount a GPS device to your windshield. If laws prevent you from using a windshield mount, then you can attach the unit to your dashboard with a flat plastic disc or with a suction cup. Although it might slide around a bit a beanbag mount can also work on your dashboard. Another option is to get a mount that fits on your air-vent grill although this will affect the airflow somewhat.

Although a car GPS device is designed to be mounted in your car, there are a few things to check out if you plan on doing this. Of the two suction cup windshield mounting bracket options, be sure to pick the rigid arm one which is more stable instead of the flexible gooseneck one. A suction cup or flat disc is an option as long as your dash has a flat surface. The pebbly surface won’t hold onto anything. You can use a beanbag mount on your flat dash but be prepared for it to slide if you slam on the breaks.

It can get a little complicated trying to sort through all the different GPS tracking devices and exciting options to determine the perfect combination of features that will best suit your individual needs. So take some time to evaluate before deciding what to buy. That will make it easier for you to make a purchase that you feel comfortable with knowing that you bought the right model.

Is Nuclear Power the Future?

27-11-2011 by Timmy

With the upcoming fusion projects in nuclear energy, one can wonder if nuclear energy will become an increasing part of our future. France already produces over 80% of all their electricity in nuclear fission plants and does so in a very safe manner. What will nuclear fusion bring to the table in terms of extra benefits to an already well-developed industry?

Before I begin, it is important to realize that nuclear fusion technology is highly experimental, and will not be financially available for anyone for perhaps over 30 years. What is it about this technology that makes the scientists shake? To answer this we need to look at how nuclear fusion works compared to the conventional fission processes.

Nuclear fission works by the famous equation E = mc^2, meaning that if we have a loss of mass, we get massive amounts of energy in return (the speed of light squared actually!). Fission processes utilizes this principle and by splitting a heavy atom (usually uranium) into two smaller ones, and the fact that these two weigh less together compared to the initial atom, we have a loss in mass thus energy. Read more about this in more detail on Energyinformative.org

Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, is almost the complete opposite. If you take two smaller atoms and “fuse” them together into a heavier, but smaller when compared to the sum of the two, energy is released.

Why is this superior to the fission processes? First of all, the “fuel” required for fusion can be derived from water. The other major advantage is the fact that the derivatives of the nuclear processes in fusion are not as dangerous and radioactive as in fission. Nuclear waste from fission processes sometimes has to be stored for as much as 100 000 years into the future, which during this time is highly dangerous for the environment and most life forms in it.

When is nuclear fusion coming? Could be 20 years, could be 100. There is not really anyone who knows for certain yet. On the other hand, we are moving forward. Nuclear fusion has already been done several times in some of the experimental plants up, but with a total net sum of energy far into the negatives. Nuclear fusion could be the solution to global warming, and it will be very interesting to see if scientists are able to tame this power, the same underlying principles fueling the sun, in the future. Read more about this here: Nuclear energy pros and cons.

Can I Fax From a Smart Phone?

23-11-2011 by Timmy

In this day and age we live in, it is very important to stay active on the go. We live fast lives that sometimes don’t allow us to stay at the office for time-consuming tasks, such as for example faxing. Luckily, there are solutions that take advantage of today’s mobile technology to bring faxing to our hands at any time in any place.

We can fax from a mobile phone using email fax services. Basically, these services allow us to send and receive faxes in the same way we send and receive everyday email messages. At the moment of signing up with one of them, you receive also a virtual fax number that other people can dial to send you faxes. They even have an option to choose between a local and a toll-free fax number for more flexibility.

There are many alternatives of email fax services, but those that offer special solutions for mobile users are RingCentral Fax, eFax and MyFax. These companies have developed special applications that turn your smartphone into a virtual faxing machine, allowing you to receive and send fax from iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices.

These applications are free to download, but in order to work you need a corresponding faxing account. Fax plans are really affordable, especially since you do not to invest in a fax machine, supplies and a dedicated fax line. But if you do not want to pay any money, you can always open a free trial account which will allow you to fax for free over Internet for 30 days, with the availability of mobile apps.

You will also find some apps that promise to manage all your online faxing. These apps usually cost around $5.00, but I advice you to stay away from them as they are a waste of your money. Besides the app you will still have to pay for an Internet fax account with limited services at your disposition.

Modern applications to fax from a let you take advantage of many useful features in your phone. For example, if you want to send a fax of a document in a digital format, you can simply take a picture of a document using your phone’s camera, just like a scanner would capture the document. From there the app will adjust automatically the document and prepare your fax for sending.

As you can see, there is no reason on staying at the office at all hours when you can fax anywhere using a mobile device!

7 Smartphone Security Tips To Protect The Device And Data

11-11-2011 by Timmy

While we spend a lot of time thinking about and protecting ourselves from viruses on our computers not so many of us consider the various security risks that come with our smartphones.  It is a fact that the data you input into your smartphone is not all that secure by itself, and if you use your phone for banking online, shopping and email it can become vulnerable to hacking, password theft and hijacking that can lead to identity theft and other security risks.

Essential Tips For Securing Smartphones

1. Perform Regular Back Ups
Many people go to the trouble of comparing smartphones, shopping around and reading user reviews, but once they have the phone they do not think twice about securing the sensitive data they will have on it.  Therefore, the first and most important tip to secure smartphones is to perform regular backups of your data.  Doing this will prevent you from losing important files and any apps that you may have downloaded.

2. Avoid Connections With Unsecured Wireless Networks And Unknown Hot Spots

Unsecured wireless networks and unknown hotspots present the danger of allowing anyone into your smartphone computer. They are often used by hackers and scammers to gain sensitive data and passwords.

3. Make Sure To Set Pins And Passwords
Always use safe and secure pins and passwords.  Do not use your birth date and use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters for passwords.  Always make sure to set a password and lock the  phone, and have a password for boot up as well whenever possible, this will prevent anyone from accessing your phone in case it is lost or stolen.

4.  Be Careful Downloading Apps
Be careful downloading apps from sources you don’t know or trust. The Android Market place and the Apple App store are always safe, but other sites that offer apps, and there are many of them might not be.

5. Keep Kids From Playing With The Device
Kids like to play with their parents gadgets but this can be problematic as they push buttons and activate things that they know nothing about.  Implement parental controls, and stop them from touching the phone which may result in them connecting to unknown and unsecured wireless networks.

6. Watch For Spam Text Messages

Spammers and hackers use text message to send links to bad places. Phishing sites that are fake versions of real websites can lure unsuspecting people to input passwords and set up accounts that can result in identity theft. While most are vigilant of such scams on their computers, many people do not feel threatened on the smartphone. Remember that when you use email, text and surf the web you are still online and the same threats apply.

7. Keep The Phone Updated
Out of date software is always vulnerable to attacks so make sure that you always download updates from the manufacturer as well as from the operating system developer. Also, usually with each update there will be security updates as well.

In summary, being careful and taking the proper precautions, as you do on your computer, is the best way to help prevent any catastrophes like identity theft and loss of data with smartphones.

Save Energy with the BloomBoss 90W UFO LED Grow Light

10-11-2011 by Timmy

This review is brought to you by Nate, an LED enthusiast, who has a personal blog on growing lights called the LED Grow Lights Review.

If you go to any garden forums and look under the indoor lighting section you are bound to see some discussion about some emerging technology. This emerging technology is LED lighting. Most growing enthusiasts believe that LED technology is closing the gap between itself and traditional grow lights (Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium Lights). One light that gets mentioned is the BloomBoss 90W LED UFO Grow light. Many claim that this light can really save on energy costs.

The argument goes that plants don’t need the full light spectrum in order to grow. For example, plants don’t really need green light and that is why they reflect it. Well if you remember back to your days in high school physical science then you’ll remember that the light from the sun emits all light colors or spectrums. Most traditional growing lights emit the full light spectrum as well.

LED enthusiasts are quick to point out that LED technology allows the creator of the light to determine the exact light frequencies and colors that are being emitted. This means they can emit only the colors that the plants need for the photosynthetic process. The BloomBoss UFO light really only emits blue and red. Because it only emits blue and red it doesn’t take as much energy or wattage to achieve similar results to traditional lights.

Another reason these LED grow lights save energy is due to the way they generate light. Traditional incandescent lights require heating up a filament. Once the filament is heated, then the light is produced (very similar to a fire). An LED light does not use this heating technique; in fact LEDs don’t even have a filament. LEDs use a complex semiconductor chip that forces electrons to drop in energy levels. When these electrons drop, light is produced.

What does saving energy mean for you? Well apart from helping the environment, it means that if you use the BloomBoss light you shouldn’t have to pay as much on your energy bill each month.

Now this is fairly sound logic and science. However, to this date the BloomBoss and other LED lights have not produced quite as good of results as the traditional lights have. This means that in order to get the same amount of tomatoes or jalapenos or flowers (or whatever you are growing) you may have to leave your LED light on longer. If you ran both an LED light and a tradition growing light for 500 hours there is no doubt that your LED light would take much less energy. But what if you have to run your LED light 1000 hours and you only have to run your traditional light for 600 hours to get similar production? The energy savings question gets much more difficult.

In conclusion, the BloomBoss UFO grow light can save you energy. However, you should keep in mind that you might have to run the light longer in order to get similar results. That being said you should still end up with an overall energy savings with this light when compared to a traditional growing light.

Web page speed – How to optimize your website to load faster

by Timmy

The speed of your website is an important metric that often goes overlooked. Many businesses spend their time optimizing their search engine rankings and conversion rates for visitors that land on their website. What about those visitors that find you but end up leaving because your website is too slow?

For the most part, web visitors are impatient people and do not want to have to wait for your website to load. If you are fortunate enough to have a potential customer click through to your website from the search engines, don’t lose them because of your web page speed. Here are a few tips on optimizing your web page speed:

Optimize your web programming

Inefficiencies in your html, css, and javascript can cause your website to load much slower than it should. Wherever possible, remove duplicate and redundant code. CSS files are a common place for redundant code as many people work through their CSS in order to get the site working and look good, but often do not go back to see if they have duplicated any of it.

When you are building your website, ask yourself, is this the best way to do what I’m trying to accomplish? If the code looks inefficient, it probably is, and there may be an easier and more efficient way to do it.

Talk to your web host

Other than inefficient code, your web hosting is possibly what is slowing your website down. If you are on a shared web hosting package, your website is sharing resources with hundreds of other websites. If your website means that much to your organization, it may be time to update to a VPS hosting account. This will give your website dedicated resources and allow you to scale your hosting quickly and easily as it receives more visitors over time.

Consider a Content Delivery Network

If your website serves a lot of large static content, such as videos or large images, you may be able to cut your load speed in half by using a content delivery network. These networks provide the ability to use an extremely fast network, separate from the network that your web host uses to deliver your content to your end user. Although there is a bit of a cost involved with using a CDN, it can influence your web page speed a lot.

Caching is an option

Your website likely runs some sort of content management system. Most of these systems need to query a database every time a visitor lands on your website. This can be very resource intensive and start to slow down your website the more visitors you have. One option to consider is to use caching in order to display your website as a static page instead of querying the database every time someone lands on your page. You can set the time frame to however long you like which will allow you to keep your content updated while providing it directly to the visitor.

How to secure your website – three simple tips

07-11-2011 by Timmy

If you own or operate a website, regardless of whether it is a business website or a personal blog, it is very important to consider your site’s security. Making sure your website is secure is far too often overlooked by absentee web masters and owners. Unfortunately, if your website ever does get compromised, it can leads to a reduction in traffic, search engine rankings, and a loss of potential revenue. Sometimes there is no avoiding having your website hacked, but here are a few tips you can follow that will make sure your website is not an easy target.

Secure your home and business computer first

Most web hosts are very secure and it would take a lot of effort for a potential intruder to get past their security. Unfortunately your website is only as safe as the computer you use to update it. FTP clients such as Filezilla will store your usernames and passwords in plain text without any encryption. What this means is that if your computer has a virus or spyware, these programs can easily capture your passwords.

Most of the time when a website is compromised it is due to stolen usernames and passwords from a personal computer. Make sure your personal and work computers are safe and do not give out your password to anyone.

If your website is business crucial, consider alternative hosting

Most people purchase the cheapest shared web hosting package they can find without any regard to security. Shared hosting is when web hosts put multiple websites on the same server. Although it is common practice, there are some security risks that go with hosting your website on servers with thousands of others.

If the server is hosting a website that gets hacked or compromised your website could be at risk due to no fault of your own. If your website is business crucial, it is recommended that you spend a little bit extra and upgrade your hosting.

Two of the more secure options are dedicated server hosting or VPS hosting. Virtual servers offer your website its own dedicated environment. Although you share the hardware with other clients on the same server, your own environment provides the peace of mind knowing their security problems won’t impact your website. A more expensive option is the dedicated server where there is no sharing at all – you have all the resources of the server.

Update all your web-based software

This is the second biggest reason why websites are compromised. Outdated installations of web-based software such as content management systems, mailing lists, or forum software often have security vulnerabilities that are own to many. When a software vendor releases a new version of their software, most of the time it is to patch a potential security hole. If you fail to upgrade your software your website may be at risk.

If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, contact the person that built your website, or the web host that hosts your site as they will be able to help you.

Don’t expect that just because your website is not very popular that you do not have a risk of having it hacked. Be prepared for the worst with recent backups. Change your passwords often and consider spending a bit extra money on a dedicated environment if your website is critical to your business success.

A Closer Look at Harnessing Nuclear Fusion Energy

05-11-2011 by Timmy

Nuclear fission is well known and widely used all over the globe for supplying cheap and stable electricity. In fact, as much as 70% of France’s entire energy demand is satisfied by the use of these fission reactors, and is done so in a safe manner (there has been very few and minor nuclear accidents in France as far as I know). What is nuclear fusion and what benefits does this type of nuclear power have over conventional fission?

To explain to you what nuclear fusion is I want to first describe what nuclear fission is, the name of the processes that today’s nuclear power plants build on. Nuclear fission is basically a heavy atom that is through a beam of neutrons split into two lighter atoms. The thing about this process is that there is a net loss of mass. This mass has in fact been transformed into heat.

We can do several things with this heat energy, but the definite most common way to harness this energy is to use to heat to produce steam, and then send the steam through a turbine. This way electricity is generated.

Nuclear fission has unfortunately several major downsides, some big enough for widespread and huge protests, green organizations and other measures to stop developing more power plants. We all know what happened in Chernobyl and just recently in Japan. The consequences of nuclear disasters are unbearable.

Another aspect of nuclear power is that the waste that is developed through the processes is highly dangerous. Some types of nuclear waste remain deadly for as long as a hundred thousand years and the disposal of this is there for very complicated.

Another major downside of fission is that we have limited fuel – it is a non-renewable energy source. We don’t have enough fuel to power the nuclear fission processes to generate electricity forever. The lasted estimates were in the range of a few hundred years, all depending on if we find new ways to harness other heavy atoms.

Nuclear fusion on the other hand, does not have a lot of these downsides. The radiation and waste is indeed dangerous, but not as much as the waste of nuclear fission, therefore making the disposal much easier.

Nuclear fusion does not rely in a limited fuel source because we use the lighter atoms. Instead of one heavy atom splitting into two small ones, the opposite happens. By using an enormous amount of heat we can take to smaller atoms and melt them together, the same process that fuels the sun. These small atoms can be extracted from various places; even seawater is a good resource.

Nuclear fusion brings a lot of new benefits to our current energy system, but this technology has a long way to go before becoming commercially doable. It has been estimated from several sources that we can expect electrical generation from nuclear fusion power plants in the 2030′s.

Read more up on nuclear power pros and cons, from the same web page that is linked above. It is very interesting to see and draw parallels about nuclear energy to sources of renewable energy such as wind or solar (e.g. wind energy pros and cons).

The Upcoming Smart Grid and Energy Storage

03-11-2011 by Timmy

We know that the future will hold a much more potent electrical grid system that will derive most if it’s energy from renewable energy sources such as solar power; wind turbines as well as other less well known like tidal and wave power. This is inevitable. We need to transition from carbon emitting energy sources and invest in the renewables. The problem with this transition is the fact that most of these upcoming energy sources are highly dependent on weather, and thus fluctuates uncontrollably over time. We might have a windy night and wind turbines generating electricity at their capacity the entire time, but what does this help when everybody is sleeping and not spending the electricity that is being generated?

It is clear that the smart energy system needs good ways to store energy, allowing is to spend it at later times. We need a system that allows us to output energy in a fast and efficient manner, without too much loss in the process. These energy sources are going to compete with fossil fuels and coal, which have been around for a long time, and thrive on the well-developed underlying technology.

There are several ways we can currently store energy. The obvious one is to store it chemically in batteries, but in large scales, this is not particularly applicable. Batteries tend to “wear out” and lose their power after a few years, which will result in higher costs for the end energy consumer. However, there are several other upcoming other ways to deal with this issue.

First one out is the flywheel. A relatively new invention that is built on old technological principles, particularly induction. By converting electricity into kinetic energy (the flywheel that spins around), we can efficiently store the energy for some period of time without losing too much of its power (about 10%).

A carbon flywheel that is installed in container and operates in vacuum makes up these devices. This allows for much higher speeds and better efficiency due to the fact that the friction is reduced to almost zero.

Hydrogen is also an interesting compound we can use to store energy. By, among other techniques, splitting water, we can save electricity into hydrogen. Hydrogen fuels are still a new and experimental way to store energy, but we expect to se more of it in the future. Read more about hydrogen this article: Hydrogen Energy Storage.

About 3D Televisions Technology And The Home Theater 3D Setup

28-10-2011 by Timmy

3D technology is becoming and more and more popular both in the movie theaters and also in people’s homes. Many find that 3D movies are more exciting and thrilling, especially when watching some of the really fun action thriller and science fiction films that Hollywood is known for releasing. Today there are so many options for televisions with HDTV, LED, Plasma, etc and many television buying guides list types of televisions including 3D models. Many want to understand how is it exactly that 3D televisions work to create those images that pop off the screen. Read on to learn about this new and innovative technology and exactly how 3D TV works.

What Is 3D

3D is the technology that converts content from two dimensional pictures into three dimensional ones which makes them appear as if they are jumping out of the televisions screen. The 3D effect is achieved by showing 2 slightly different images to each human eye separately, which makes them appear in 3D.

3D Technology

Passive 3D

The first type of 3D technology is known as passive 3D. This specific technology exhibits both of the images to the left as well as the right eye concurrently and is utilized together with 3G glasses that don’t have appropriate shutters. The disadvantage to this technology tends to be that image resolution becomes cut in half, therefore, the images will not be displayed in full HD. That is the main reason that those that make 3D models utilize active 3D technology.

Active 3D

Active 3D is the more widely used process for 3D which makes use of a couple of individual images, one for the left eye and one for the right, both of which alternate in fast sequence. The glasses used for this sort of 3D employ shutters that open and close very fast to command which of the eyes can see the image. Because active 3D can be displayed in a high resolution that is the technology used by manufacturers of modern 3D television sets.

The 3D Glasses

Right now you need the special 3D glasses to see 3D images, that’s exactly how 3D television sets work and at the movie theaters also. However, the engineering for 3D TV without the need of glasses is expected to become reality within the next couple of years.

The 3D Home Theater Set Up

Be aware that neither of the above varieties of 3D glasses works with any kind of HDTV. It is necessary to have  a 3D ready television set for the syncing of the images on the television set together with the glasses. Televisions generally work with an infra red emitter to communicate with active 3D glasses. Furthermore, a Blu Ray player is also required that is 3D compatible in playing 3D movies.

Furthermore, keep in mind that not everything you watch on a 3D TV will display in 3D, meaning the content must also be in 3D format. Because this is a very new technology there is not a big selection of movies in 3D. Several 3D TV sets can convert regular 2D content to 3D content, but the particular quality of the images is significantly worse when compared with content which is produced in 3D.

Now that you know how this technology works you will be able to choose the right model for your home. Whether it’s worth the added cost really depends on you, but many people love the added viewing experience they get from watching shows in 3D in their own home.

What’s the Difference Between Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion?

27-10-2011 by Timmy

Already in the 1930’s scientist started working on releasing the massive potential in nuclear power.  A few years later, in 1945, two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were both bombed by nuclear bombs, killing several hundred thousand citizens. Nuclear power has later been used for peaceful purposes, most well known are the nuclear reactors, providing a stable source of electrical current at an affordable price. There are massive forces at place in both nuclear fusion and fission, but what is the difference?

Albert Einstein and E = mc2

Most people are somewhat familiar with Einstein’s famous formula, E = mc^2. The basic gist of it is this: With a small loss in mass, vast amounts of energy are released.

What does this mean when it comes to nuclear energy?

Nuclear Fission

Nuclear fission describes the processes where a neutron is fired into a heavy atom (in most cases uranium is used) and splitting into two smaller atoms. If we were to weigh the two product atoms and compare it to the heavier one, we would discover that we have lost some mass.

So, where did this remaining mass go? A small part of it was sent out as radiation (which we will talk about later), but the remaining of the lost mass is transformed into heat energy. If you look at the formula above (where c is the constant for the speed of light), it gets apparent that a very small amount of mass is equivalent to a massive amount of energy.

Nuclear Fusion

Nuclear fission is in many ways the exact opposite. If we take two smaller atoms and fuse them together into a larger one, we also have a net loss of mass. This is the process that fuels the sun. There are two major advantages of nuclear fusion: Cheap and abundant fuel as well as much less radiation and waste problems.

However, nuclear fusion is still very experimental. It has indeed been done several times in tokamak nuclear fusion reactors around the world, but this has resulted in a net gain of several hundred MW in one session.

We obviously have a long way to go before nuclear fusion is commercially realizable, but better technology is consistently taking us a few steps forward. It will be interesting to see in the future how big of an impact nuclear fusion has on our energy system.
